Chantal Savaresse started Tomahawk salon in 2010 in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Besides being a barber she is obsessed with death, oddities and the macabre. She grew up to a bartending, fortune telling, foul mouthed women who taught her to march to the beat of her own drum. The shop’s decor resembles all her loves from mounted and preserved animals, to her tools of divination the tarot cards, it’s an odd and quirky environment that she built from the ground up. Tomahawk has deep meaning to her not only as a person of color from indigenous and mixed heritage but as a women who uses the tomahawk as defiance as well as kinship.
